Tromsø decides it hates cities

The municipal council in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø voted unanimously on Tuesday to end its “frienship city” ties with Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Nadym with immediate effect. Mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen of the Labour Party cited the “serious situation” that’s emerged after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. “This is important for Tromsø and the role we have in the Arctic,” said Wilhelmsen,, independent website in Oslo

Svalbard Tourism Council excludes Russian member. Claiming it was “no longer possible to remain passive about the warfare in Ukraine,” the Svalbard Tourism Council voted this week to cut ties with one of its own members, the Russian state-owned firm Trust Arcticugol in the popular tourist destination of Barentsburg. The council on the Norwegian-run Arctic archipelago claimed it’s reacting to “related violations of international law and human rights.”
